Kentucky joins the lawsuit concerning transgender bathrooms

Posted: Updated:

The Commonwealth of Kentucky is joining the lawsuit against the federal government over new guidelines on how schools should accommodate transgender students.

Governor Matt Bevin made the announcement Friday morning. Bevin said the government does not have the authority to dictate school districts' bathroom or locker policies. He also said that President Obama's Administration's guidelines are "an absurd federal overreach into a local issue.

In a written statement released today, Bevin wrote, “Unfortunately, Attorney General Andy Beshear is unwilling to protect Kentucky’s control over local issues. Therefore, my administration will do so by joining this lawsuit. We are committed to protecting  the Tenth Amendment and fighting federal overreach into state and local issues.”
