Construction zones down for Memorial Day weekend travel

Posted: Updated:
MAYFIELD, Ky -

Traveling this Memorial Day weekend? Most construction zones in our area are coming down to make it easier on you and your family. But you'll still see some orange on your way to get where you're going.

Kentucky 80 and the purchase parkway will still be reduced to one lane.

Most of the orange barrels will be pulled over to give you more room to drive this weekend, but for those areas that may give you some trouble, it's all in your best interest.

Mya Baker and Casey Smith have the family loaded up, with pets and boat in tow. They say going to Kentucky Lake is their annual Memorial Day weekend tradition.

But to make this weekend as stress free as possible, they've decided to avoid construction zones entirely and take the back roads. Kentucky transportation cabinet spokesperson Keith Todd says the cabinet has done all it can to make travel easier.

"We're going to be taking down almost all of the work zones through west Kentucky," Todd says.

Those that are up are there to keep you and your family safe. "Anytime you go into a work zone, whether it's over a holiday or during normal driving, just be cautious," Todd says.

Mya and Casey say, for this weekend in particular, they're cautious on all roads, so they can make it to the lake.

Todd also tells me the office of highway safety is providing enforcement grants, so police will still be out to make sure you buckle your seat belts and drive safely on the roads.

He also recommends taking breaks and watching for fatigue if you're driving long distances.
