Poll: Voters interested, not excited about election

Posted: Updated:

Sixty-five percent of Americans say they're interested in the White House race, but only 23 percent say they're excited, according to a new poll.

Majorities of Republicans and Democrats say the campaign has left them angry, helpless and frustrated, according to the poll by the Associated Press - N-O-R-C Center for Public Affairs Research. Only 13 percent say they're proud of what has transpired.

Election experts say the gap between Americans' high interest and low excitement makes the race to succeed President Barack Obama highly unpredictable.

Mary Heintzelman shakes her head in disgust over the presidential election. The 68-year-old administrative assistant from Whitehall, Pennsylvania, says she doesn't think there's a suitable candidate in either party.

Her son suggests she write in a candidate when she votes in November, but she says: "I don't even know who to write in."
