Illinois Legislature meets in rare Sunday session

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -

Illinois lawmakers will be back at work in Springfield on Sunday trying to come up with a budget plan that will have the support of members of both political parties.

Speaker Michael Madigan and House Democrats last week passed an unbalanced budget plan that is headed for the Senate. Gov. Bruce Rauner, noting the plan is out of balance by $7 billion, has made it clear he will veto it if it reaches his desk.

Rauner continues to push for a balanced budget and reforms that he says will grow the state's economy and protect homeowners from heavy property tax burden.

Illinois doesn't have a state budget nearly 11 months into the fiscal year. The next fiscal year starts July 1. The legislature adjourns their spring session Tuesday.
