Cincinnati Zoo gorilla exhibit set to reopen

Posted: Updated:

The Cincinnati Zoo plans to reopen the gorilla exhibit Tuesday with a more secure public barrier. You'll remember, the exhibit closed after a 3-year-old boy fell into it prompting zoo officials to shoot and kill Harambe, the gorilla who lived in the exhibit.

The public barrier around the exhibit will stand 6 inches higher than before. The barrier will be 3.5 inches tall. The safety changes also include a solid wood beam frame and knotted rope netting. The taller fence around the exhibit means zoo designers must navigate carefully to make sure all the animals are comfortable and stimulating to people who came to see them.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums says zoos must abide by rigorous requirements to be accredited and maintain good standing. The Cincinnati Zoo was recognized by that organization just last year for being continuously accredited for the past 25 years.
