Daith piercing - a cure for migraines?

Posted: Updated:

There are a million things that set each of us apart, but there is one thing millions have in common - migraines.  The Cleveland Clinic estimates 12 percent of the U.S. population suffers from migraines. There is still not one, single treatment or cure that works for everyone the same.  However, there is something many of you say works - the daith piercing.

If you look it up, you will see there is no medical research supporting the effectiveness of daith piercing, but if you ask someone who has had it done, most will say it has worked for them.

It's quick and pretty much painless.

"I would say about 99 percent go that's nothing compared to the migraine," said body piercer and co-owner of My Reality Danielle Fera.

Fera says she does on average at least 20 daith piercings a week.

Christina Franklin crossed state-lines to be here for a jewelry change.  Before she got her daith piercing, she suffered from migraines for about 30 years.

"It's like somebody driving nails into your head, it's probably one of the worst pains you can have from the neck up," said Franklin.

It has been four months since she got it pierced and she has not had a single migraine.

"A migraine is debilitating, it keeps you from doing normal stuff, to be without one has been awesome," said Franklin.

She is not the only one who says it works.

"I have nurses that are sending patients to me. It's been incredible," said Fera.

My Reality is located in Murray, Kentucky. The parlor is seeing an increase in customers coming in for daith piercings.

"People turn to me in utter shock that this migraine is gone that they've been fighting with for days, and taking medications and this fixes it," said Fera.

Fera has been doing piercings for 13 years.  She said this piercing has given her job new purpose.

"I love seeing that smile on someone's face that their headache is going away," said Fera.

For some, just a little pain is worth it for potential headache relief.

The reasoning - behind how the daith piercing could work to relieve headaches - is related to acupuncture.
