Paducah man charged with burglarizing Plato's Closet

Posted: Updated:

A Paducah man was arrested for burglary after officers recognized him from surveillance video.

On Wednesday, 40-year-old Derek Hasselbrink called Paducah police to report that a bicycle he had reported as stolen was found.

Officers who responded to the call did a routine check on Hasselbrink and learned there was a warrant out for his arrest from Metropolis, Illinois.

Before Hasselbrink was booked into jail, officers realized that he was identical to the man seen in surveillance photos breaking into Plato's Closet on James Sanders Boulevard last Thursday.

Plato's Closet was broken into around 12:53 a.m. on June 2nd. Surveillance video shows a man entered through a door, searching a cash register, and leaving.

The man was bald and had a goatee.

Officers said they also had several tips that Hasselbrink was the burglar.

An officer interviewed Hasselbrink at the jail and charged him with 3rd degree burglary.?
