Women's shelter hopes to expand opportunities for domestic violence victims

MAYFIELD, KY (AP) -

The weekend after Thanksgiving last year was not so kind to Mayfield's Lighthouse Women's Shelter.  A fire kept Executive Director Kay Moyers from opening the doors for nearly four months.

"Because of insurance, we could not take anyone in," Moyers told Local 6.

It broke her heart having to turn families away. But Moyers believes things are better now, and she's currently overseeing the care of 19 women and children. "The need is tremendous. I am amazed at the need out there," she said.

The lighthouse board president has her sights set on more than just the Mayfield location. She wants to expand into Calloway County and offer services to domestic violence victims beyond temporary housing.

"We know domestic violence is a cycle. When children are raised in domestic violence, they learn either to be a perpetrator or a victim, and neither of those roles are healthy roles," Traci Lawrence said.

She wants to pursue a residential mentoring program in Murray that would give women, including pregnant teens, the chance to apply for jobs and understand life skills like financial responsibility, health care and mental health awareness.

"With the mentoring facility, we would like to have people stand alongside them and mentor, so that they can be independent," Lawrence said.

That could give women and their kids the opportunity to move on from their past as they look ahead to what Moyers hopes is a bright future.

"That is a mother's heart is take care of her children, and that's my heart too," Moyers said with a smile.

You can send donations to the Lighthouse Women's Shelter at PO Box 5375 Mayfield, KY or to The Way For Wellness program at PO Box 1122 Murray, KY 42071.
