Maker of video threatening black SIU students identified

CARBONDALE, IL -

The maker of a racist video threatening violence on the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale campus has been identified, the college announced Friday.

The video, which called for lynching and beating black students, was posted earlier this spring on YouTube and social media.

SIU did not reveal the name of the person who made the video, but described him in a news release Friday as a 19-year-old white man living in the Chicago region.

SIU says detectives of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Public Safety, working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Jackson County state’s attorney’s Office, identified the man as the video's maker.

The university says the teen admitted making the video as a prank. SIU stressed that he isn't affiliated with the university, any of the groups that participated in protests at the end of the semester, or the fraternity the video claimed was involved.

SIU says the Jackson County state’s attorney has declined to prosecute, because "the video could be considered protected speech."
