Demolition of old Eggners Ferry Bridge expected to ramp up this week

AURORA, KY -

Demolition of the old Eggners Ferry Bridge over Kentucky Lake near Aurora is expected to start ramping up this week.

Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says crews could start saw cutting the concrete decking Monday afternoon.

Deck removal is expected to take about 2 to 4 weeks to complete.

After the deck is removed, the spans at the end of the bridge will be lifted from the piers by cranes and put on barges for disassembly.

The remaining spans in the middle will be demolished using explosives. Right now explosive demolition of the bridge is expected in late July or early August.

The new US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge was opened to traffic on April 8.

The U.S. Coast Guard wants the old bridge to come down as soon as possible, due to an offset of the navigation channel between the two structures.
