Volunteers tackle first day of construction for community playground

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of volunteers have been out at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and 14th Street Monday for the first day of construction one of a kind community playground.

"This park is going to be a catalyst for this part of town," said Terri Lundberg, first time volunteer. A monetary donation was not good enough for the mother of five and local business owner, who decided to take a field trip to lend a helping hand."Lifting, carrying, pounding nails. But I have to draw a line at the circular saw," said Lundberg.

The circular saw is taken care of. Each person on site has a role in making something special. "The play area is customized to Paducah. It's only in Paducah. It will never be built again," said Lee Archin, Play by Design co-founder.

This is no out of the box play set. It started with raw materials. With the help of the 110 volunteers scheduled, the goal is to have all 182 posts up by the end of the day Monday. And at 11:30 in the morning on day one, a skeleton of the play ground was taking shape.

"This is an awesome opportunity to give back to the community in your blood, sweat and tears," said Lundberg.

In 6 days, the hard work from your neighbors and mine will provide the community with an all inclusive playground for kids with a range of abilities

All volunteer slots are full. For people who did sign up, organizers ask that you show up for your scheduled volunteer time.
