Doctor faces fraud, drug charges in McCracken County

Posted: Updated:

A McCracken County doctor faces federal charges including fraudulent possession of a controlled substance.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Kentucky says 46-year-old Dr. Sean McDonald was charged by a federal information Wednesday with fraudulent possession of a controlled substance, wire fraud and making false statements related to health care matters. He faces 12 counts, total.

McDonald is accused of defrauding Lourdes hospital and Baptist Health Paducah via wire communication from February of 2009 through November of 2010. McDonald allegedly sent a payment request from Baptist Health Paducah and/or Lourdes hospital to patient’s insurance carriers. In the same time frame, McDonald allegedly lied to insurance carriers, claiming he gave medication to patients that he hadn't really given.

The attorney's office says McDonald was a prescribing physician with a Drug Enforcement Administration registration number to issue prescriptions, and he allegedly wrote prescriptions for Dilaudid — a Schedule II controlled substance — to patients, but never provided the prescriptions to the patients. The attorney's office says that is a violation of McDonald's DEA registration.
