Polls are open: Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the EU?

LONDON (AP) -

Polls in Britain are open right now as voters are answering one question: "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?"

Those pushing to leave the EU argue that a British exit can restore power to Parliament and control immigration.

Those pushing to remain in the bloc, like Prime Minister David Cameron, argue that Britain is safer and richer inside the 28-nation EU.

A record-setting 46.5 million people registered to cast their ballot by 10 p.m.Wednesday night. Early voters reported lines at polling stations despite torrential rain in London that caused localized floods, disrupting train services and blocking roads.

Opinion polls suggest the "Leave" campaign, which favors withdrawal from the EU, is virtually tied with those urging voters to "Remain" in the trading bloc.

With no major exit poll planned by U.K. broadcasters, a clear picture isn't expected to emerge about the overall result until early Friday.
