Community playground in Paducah ready for children

Posted: Updated:

From 182 holes in the ground a week ago to a 4000 square foot playground Sunday. The Paducah Rotary Club cut the ribbon Sunday to a brand new community built playground equipped with essentials like slides, swings, and monkey bars.

Glen Anderson, who is Paducah Rotary Club's next president starting Wednesday, has been working all week and assigning more than 1,700 volunteers to different jobs to complete the playground on time.

"This is awesome. It's amazing what a community can do when they come together," Anderson said.

Volunteer Jason McHaney took 5 days off from work to work on the playground project every day.

"I've really enjoyed it. It's been a remarkable experience something I would definitely do again," McHaney said.

Other than the foundation, the set up is all community work guided by the Play By Design team. It took close to 8,000 man-hours from a lot of people of different ages, and skills levels to complete the project in one week.

"We have a lot of people from businesses that come in the morning. We've had McCracken County and Paducah Tilghman football teams that have come in," McHaney said.

Finishing the playground came down to the wire.

"Needed the skill sets maybe we didn't have some days that made it a little more difficult or questionable how we'd get it done," Anderson said.

However, volunteers pulled through and Sunday was spent putting finishing touches.

If you couldn't make it out to volunteer but still want to be a part of this community project you can buy a playground picket. For $50, you can buy a blank picket and add names, a business, or group to the picket purchased. To purchase one head to Paducah Rotary Club's playground website by clicking here.
