Evacuation order lifted after gas line leak contained

PADUCAH, KY -

A portion of Paducah was evacuated for nearly 10 hours on Thursday due to a gas leak.

ATMOS Energy spokesperson Kay Coomes says construction was going on near Pecan Court around 8:30 a.m. when an eight inch transmission line was damaged.

Coomes says they are still trying to figure out if the line was damaged by a contractor for the company or ATMOS Energy crews.

Homes and businesses in a 500-foot radius were evacuated. That included some of the buildings at Western Kentucky Community and Technical College.

The college says about 85 people were evacuated. Most of them were from the Emerging Technology Center, including a Hooked on Science camp for first through fifth grade children.

Paducah police say even though the road is back open, there may still be crews working on the line Friday morning.
