Hot weather can increase drowning numbers

Posted: Updated:

As temperatures rise, so does the number of people at the pool. And, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, so does the number of drownings. Local lifeguards are making sure your child isn't one of them.

While your kids play, the lifeguards at Paducah's Noble Park Pool are hard at work. Before your child can go down the slide or even jump off the diving board, they have to pass a swim test.

Recreation Superintendent Amie Clark says there's always at least seven lifeguards on duty, sometimes more.

"We have guards that are certified. They do this every day," says Clark. "You know, my kids come swimming here, and I trust the staff that we hire. We do our very best to keep everyone safe while they're here."

As of last month, there have been 149 reports nationally of children drowning this year.
