A man accused of using a young girl as a shield was arrested in Graves County Thursday afternoon, according to the sheriff's department.

The Graves County Sheriff's Department says around 12:40 p.m. Thursday 37-year-old Adam Jones called to report people were trying to kill him at a home on Gills Lane, telling dispatchers he had smoked methamphetamine earlier. When deputies arrived, they say Jones was sitting in the front yard, and he was using a 6-year-old girl as a shield.

The sheriff's department says as deputies approached, Jones was yelling at the girl, telling her the deputies were going to kill her. After deputies ordered Jones to release the girl, he did, and she ran away from him.

Deputies say Jones was arrested after a struggle. They also say before they arrived, Jones had been walking up and town Kentucky 94 with the child, holding onto her so tightly as to cause her pain.

The sheriff's department says the Department for Families and Children took custody of the child. They say she was checked, and she was not badly harmed.

When Jones was arrested, deputies say they found marijuana on him. He was taken to Jackson Purchase Medical Center to be medically cleared, and deputies say he tried to escape from the hospital numerous times. They also say he threatened to kill one deputy when deputies started to leave with him.

Jones was charged with first degree wanton endangerment, first degree unlawful imprisonment, fourth degree assault (child abuse), resisting arrest, public intoxication by a controlled substance, falsely reporting an incident, possession of marijuana, buying and/or possessing drug paraphernalia, second degree disorderly conduct, and third degree terroristic threatening.
