Back to School: homework success techniques for your child

Parents and student soften dread the H word when the school year starts: Homework.  

While it's probably not a favorite for your child, educators stress it is essential to solidify what your son or daughter learned in school. 

Laura Pratt with Sylvan Learning Center encourages parents to enforce the homework routine from day one by figuring out the best time to complete homework. 

"Some kids, when they come in from school they need to be able to run and get all that energy out when they've been sitting at a desk all day. Other kids, it's easier for them to sit down while their mind is fresh and on school still and get that done," Pratt said. 

Pratt said younger students can focus for 20 to 30 minutes while high school students can for 45 minutes to an hour. It's necessary for parents and the teachers to enforce how important homework in their education. 

A new study reveals students can't concentrate on homework for more than two minutes without distracting themselves with social media and email on a cell phone or tablet. Parents need to eliminate these from the space where your child does homework.

"Talk about how important it is to just unplug for 30 minutes to an hour to be able to really focus on your homework so that you're not distracted," Pratt said. 

A red flag that your student is struggling with homework is frustration and dropping grades. 

"Contact the teacher and have an open communication with the teacher about what their struggles are, that can help tremendously," Pratt said. 

Homework is your child's responsibility and yours. For younger students, setting up a chart at home to track homework completion with a prize or treat helps.  Also, rethink your approach to homework. Talk with your child about how homework isn't always going to be fun. Don't engage in the fight or escalate the battle. Be prepared to stay consistent and strong in the beginning or else you're setting yourself up to have the same problems every night.
