Shooting of Carbondale police officer first in 46 years

Officer Trey Harris is the first Carbondale police officer to be shot on the job in more than 46 years.

According to the police department, there has only been three incidents of officers shot on the job. This is their timeline:

August 20, 1933 – Officer Lenard Sizemore was shot and killed after being called to a disturbance.
August 3, 1961 – Chief Roy Bain was shot four times at the Franklin Hotel and survived.
November 12, 1970 – Multiple officers were injured after a gun fight on North Washington Street with six SIU students who were Black Panther members. All officers survived.

Officer Harris was shot late Sunday night. Police are still searching for the suspect in that shooting.

Meanwhile, Harris is out of the hospital and recovering at home.

Donations for Harris can be sent or dropped of at the Carbondale Public Safety Building. Checks need to be payable to "CPD Injured Officers Fund."
