A wreck on Interstate 57 in Williamson County, Illinois, that blocked traffic for several hours Friday took the life of a passenger of one of the vehicles involved.

The Illinois State Police says The wreck involved a 2007 International straight truck driven by 49-year-old Tab Barks of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; A 2015 Chevy Silverado pickup truck driven by 72-year-old Robert Gean of Harbor Springs, Michigan; and a 2016 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by 28-year-old Gagnjot Virk of Bolingbrook, Illinois.

Troopers say the vehicles were headed south on I-57 near mile post 56 when the pickup and tractor-trailer each slowed for an upcoming construction zone. When that happened, troopers say the straight line truck failed to slow down and hit the pickup truck, pushing it into the rear of the tractor-trailer.

ISP says 72-year-old Carol Gean, who was a passenger in the pickup truck, was killed in the crash. The law enforcement agency says Robert Gean suffered critical injuries and was flown to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana. ISP says Barks also suffered critical injuries and was flown to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Virk sustained minor injuries in the crash.

The wreck happened at 11:12 a.m. on Aug. 5. The Williamson County Emergency Management Agency announced that the roadway was back open at 3:40 p.m.
