Is your child kindergarten ready?

Posted: Updated:

We are making sure your student is ready for kindergarten. If you have a Pre-K child at home right now, this is the time to start making sure they know their ABCs and 123's before next year.

Kindergarten is an important time. Here is how you can make sure you and your child are all ready for a successful first year of school.

Simple, but fun brain-boosting games help stimulate the mind.

"Even if kids are ahead, it keeps them caught up during the summer," said Sylvan Director of Education Laura Pratt.

Staying ahead of the game.  That is Patty Wallace's plan.

"I think it's important to start reading with them, introducing them to language and books," said Wallace.

She is a mom of two.  Her oldest, Nathan is going into 2nd grade but she remembers the start of kindergarten like it was yesterday.

"I was so sad to see my baby off to school. I would keep the line of communication open for the teacher," said Wallace.

Wallace knows firsthand how important it is to teach your child the basics.

"He knew his first and last name, our address, his phone number, the road we lived on, what our house looked like, so if he ever got separated he could tell them where we lived and mommy's phone number," said Wallace.

When it comes to learning, Pratt says a little goes a long way.

"You read to your kid before they are born. That literacy and early awareness is the most important thing. Kids minds grow the most from birth to five," said Pratt.

Pratt has advice for the parents sending their kids off to school for the first time.

"I would tell them, 3 o'clock is going to come. The first day of school is hard for a kid and a parent," said Pratt.

By doing things together, you will show that learning is fun and important. Some other suggestions for parents that are getting ready to send their kids off to kindergarten. Stay involved in your child's education and get on a schedule.
