CARBONDALE, IL -

Carbondale police say three people from Kansas have been arrested regarding a shooting on July 31 in the southern Illinois city.

Police say 22-year-old Alex Karcher, 22-year-old Xavier McCray, and 24-year-old Xavier Lewis were arrested in Saline County, Kansas, in the late night hours of Aug. 7 and the early morning hours of Aug. 8.

The men are charged with conspiracy to commit capital murder. All three subjects, who are Kansas residents, were booked into the Saline County, Kansas, Jail on $1 million bond.

The arrests were conducted by investigators with the I-135/I-70 Drug Task Force; Saline County, Kansas, Sheriff’s Office; Salina, Kansas, Police Department; McPherson, Kansas, Police Department; Saline County, Kansas, Attorney’s Office; and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Carbondale police officer Officer Trey Harris was shot on the evening of July 31, but the police department did not specify in its announcement of the arrests whether they stem from that specific investigation.

Carbondale Deputy Police Chief Stan Reno told Local 6's Rachael Krause in an email Wednesday: "The arrests made in Kansas are part of the entire investigation. None of the suspects have been charged specifically with the shooting involving Officer Harris."
