Posted: Updated:

The Illinois State Police wants to remind you to be alert for children walk and riding bikes to school, as well as for stopped buses, as the academic year starts.

In a news release sent Thursday, ISP says drivers need to remember to watch their speed and limit distractions in school zones. Troopers say the speed limit in school zones is 20 mph, and those zones are in effect from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. when children are present.

Troopers also say drivers approaching stopped school buses with lights activated and signs extended have to stop their vehicles before reaching the buses, If you don't, you could be fined $150, and your driver's license could be suspended for three months.

ISP also advises that you remember pedestrians have the right-of-way at crosswalks
