Kids back to class despite roof issues

MURPHYSBORO, IL -

Kids in Murphysboro are back to class, but some classrooms had to move.

The roof of the high school’s auditorium collapsed just two weeks before kids would come back for the school year. Principal Tony Wilson says they demolished the roof and most of the auditorium for safety. Wilson says he’s grateful no students were inside when the roof fell, even if it makes the first day a little cramped now.

"There is normally class in here, there's a few classes in here throughout the day and we just had to relocate them. And, fortunately, everything's worked out, and we haven't lost any programming. So, we're pretty fortunate," Wilson said.

He says replacing the auditorium will take around one year. Wilson says it’s too soon to know how much this will cost.
