Former correctional officer sentenced to prison for giving inmate contraband

BENTON, IL -

A former corrections officer was sentenced in federal court in Benton, Illinois, Tuesday on charges alleging she provided contraband to a prison inmate.

United States Attorney Donald Boyce's office says 42-year-old Marion woman Renee Strauss was sentenced to serve four months in prison and pay $345 in fines on the contraband charges. The sentence also includes two years of parole, and she had to resign. She has pleaded guilty to charges alleging she provided cellphones and other contraband to a USP-Marion inmate and lied to federal investigators about it between June 2015 and Sept. 2015.

Boyce's office says Strauss gave three cellphones and other contraband to an inmate while she was a Federal Bureau of Prisons case manager and correctional officer at the prison. The office says she also later lied to investigators to cover that up.
