Livingston County Cram the Cruiser event aims to feed families

Posted: Updated:
LIVINGSTON Co, Ky -

The Livingston County Sheriff's Department kicked off its first Cram the Cruiser Event on Monday. All month long the cruiser will be parked outside locations throughout the county, and anyone can place nonperishable food donations inside.

All the donations will be sent to the Livingston County Helping Hands Food Pantry, which helps more than 300 families put food on the table each month.

Many of the groceries that hit the check out counter at Salem Food Market on Monday won't be going home with customers. Instead, they'll be put in the sheriff's cruiser Eddie Watson is happy to have parked outside his market.

"I think all you need to do is make people aware of the need, and they'll help," Watson said.

Paul Shouse and his wife took a trip to the store just to buy groceries to put into the cruiser.

"You can't have too many. The need is always there. There are not enough jobs in Livingston County," Shouse said.

That is why the Livingston County Sheriff's Department decided to sponsor a Cram the Cruiser event for the first time. The nonperishable items it collects will be sent to Livingston County Helping Hands Food Pantry, a nonprofit Sheriff Bobby Davidson says many families rely on.

"I don't know what the problem may be in their family. It doesn't matter. We have an organization that steps up and helps families," Davidson said.

After being parked for only an hour and a half, donations were already piling up.

"It's things like this...There's hope, you know? There's hope," Davidson said.

"Before the week's over, I expect them to have that thing full several times," Watson said.

Watson can't wait to help customers the event keeps bringing in.

The cruiser will be at the following locations:

Salem Food Market: Sept. 5 through Sept. 10.

Village Cafe in Grand Rivers: Sept. 12 through Sept. 16

Smithland Dollar Store: Sept. 19 through Sept 24

Poppy's Meat Shop in Ledbetter: Sept. 26 through Oct.1
