Families struggle to return to their normal lives after flooding in southern Louisiana.
The flooding happened after students in East Baton Rouge started school, making Wednesday like a second first day of the academic year. At least 11 schools flooded in the district, so students from flooded schools are going to other schools for the time being.
There is one Louisiana school district that will start even later. Kids in Livingston Parish start Monday, Sept. 12.
You’ve seen the damage on TV and social media. Thursday, I got to speak via Facetime with Kay Landry, who lives among the chaos. “Just about everyone I know has lost their home, their place of work, everything's gone,” Landry said.
The Murray Rotary Club is lending a hand by donating school supplies to students who were in school for six days before they lost everything to water. Murray Rotary Club President Mark Welch said they’re doing it because it’s part of the club's motto: service above self. And, because of the ice storm that hit the Local 6 area in 2009, he said the situation in Louisiana hits close to home. “A lot of people think this is just another natural event, and a flood, but it's not," he said.
The plan it to load up a trailer and take it from Murray to Livingston Parish. It’s more than 500 miles and takes more than seven hour to get there.
Welch said No. 2 pencils won’t fill all the need there, but he hopes it will help. “Our greatest calling as followers of Jesus is to live our lives to the benefit of others. I can't think of a greater calling than that,” Welch said.
If you’d like to help, but couldn’t make it to the event at the Bel-Air shopping center Thursday, you can still drop off supplies until Wednesday, Sept. 15, at Gallimore Electrical Contractors at 403 Memory Lane in Murray and New Life Christian Bookstore at 100 South 5th Street in Murray.
You can also send a monetary donation by writing a check to the “Rotary of Baton Rouge Foundation with “Flood Relief” in the memo line and mailing it to 9625 Fenway Ave., Baton Rouge, LA 70809
