9/11 anniversary ceremony ends with taps

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (AP) -

With the sound of taps, the New York ceremony marking the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks has come to an end.

Organizers estimate that 8,000 people gathered today at the lower Manhattan spot where the twin towers of the World Trade Center once stood. They listened for nearly four hours as names were read of the nearly 3,000 people who died in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Commemorations were also held at the Pentagon and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville.

Players and coaches from around Major League Baseball are wearing caps with American flag patches to mark the anniversary of the attacks. The league says proceeds from sales of those caps will be donated to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, the Pentagon Memorial and the Flight 93 Memorial.

The anniversary was marked at Yankee Stadium before a game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
