Date set for idling of Calvert City steel mill

Posted: Updated:

An exact date has been announced for when a steel mill in Calvert City will idle, about a month after Calvert City's mayor announced the company planned to idle the mill.

In August, Mayor Lynn Jones said employees at the Gerdau Ameristeel plant had been notified that the plant would idle. The mill was expected to idle by sometime in November, but an exact date had not been set at that time.

On Monday, Sept. 26, the communications and public affairs director for Gerdau North America told Local 6's Ashley Sanchez that the mill will idle effective Nov. 15, 2016.

The spokesperson said:

The company and the Union reached an agreement regarding the effects of the idling of the Calvert City mill. A WARN notice was issued on Thursday, Sept. 15 to ensure compliance with the law and to provide advance notice to its employees of upcoming layoffs. The mill will be idled effective Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016

In August, Jones said idling the plant could mean of more than 100 jobs lost. Jones said the city and county will do everything they can to help the employees.
