Murray State says suspect found in connection to reported gun on campus

Posted: Updated:
MURRAY, KY -

Murray State University has sent a text message alert to students and faculty Tuesday night saying a person with a weapon seen on campus has been "identified and located." The latest alert says people on campus can resume normal activities.

An initial alert sent around 8:26 p.m. Tuesday warned students that a person with a weapon was seen near the wellness center. That alert warned students to stay out of the area.

A second alert sent shortly after the initial text described a suspect. The text said he is a thin, black male standing between 5 feet, 6 inches tall and 5 feet, 8 inches. It said he has short hair, and he was wearing gray pants, a blue shirt and green shoes. The alert said the suspect was last seen in a dark SUV.

The college also sent out an email that said the person was armed with a handgun.

We have included a screenshot of the texts that were sent to us, as well as a screenshot of the email.

Before the update telling students and faculty they could resume normal activities was sent out, Local 6's Todd Faulkner spoke with Murray State spokeswoman Dr. Adrienne King Tuesday night. She said at that time the college had not issued a lock down, but university police were investigating the report.

After the all clear was sent out, King updated us to say campus police were continuing to investigate now that the suspect has been found.

We also reached out to Murray State University Police, but we have not heard back yet. We will continue to bring you more on this story as details emerge.
