2016 Kentucky Safe Schools Week to focus on bullying prevention

Posted: Updated:

Next week will be safe school week in Kentucky, according to the Kentucky Department of Education, and the focus this year is bullying prevention.

Commissioner of Education Stephen Pruitt signed a proclamation declaring Oct. 16 to 22 Safe Schools Week. The week aims to raise public awareness and improve school safety. The department of education says it plans to do that by educating students, school staff, and community members about bullying prevention, conflict resolution and relationship building.

The theme for 2016 is "Be the hero; STOP the bullying!" The department of education says the theme encourages students and adults who know of an unsafe situation in their school to let school personnel know anonymously using the STOP tipline.

The Kentucky Department of Education says students are also encouraged to sign this pledge:

I pledge to:
Honor others and myself by not bullying or participating in bullying activities;
Encourage others to stop actions that could be perceived as bullying;
Respect the everyday heroes in authority around me;
Take Opportunities to become a HERO.
