Rescue dogs make a great pet any time of year, but this month is National Adopt a Dog month. What better time than now to head to your local shelter and take home an animal in need?
For one local couple, a shelter animal has made a huge difference in their lives.
Cricket was featured on our Forever Home Friday series back in July.
"I saw her on T.V. and you were holding her. She looked so sweet and precious. So I got off the couch and I ran over to my husband and said look at this baby. I said, '"Roy, I want this baby,"' said Pamela Buijk.
Pamela and Roy Buijk say their life changed that day.
"It was very emotional for me. She was so kissy," said Pamela.
The couple lost their dog, Fritz less than a year ago.
"Nobody can ever take away the loss of my Fritz, but Fox filled that void so well with how much she loved us," said Pamela.
Cricket is now named Fox. To say she is loved is an understatement.
"They're family," said Roy.
"They're never just the animal, they are family. They are treated the same way. Fox goes everywhere with us," said Pamela.
October is special for the Buijk's. It is National Adopt a Dog month.
"She has a little personality, which is wonderful. She's lively and she plays with Maggie Mae. I hope Fox loves her life with us and I would definitely adopt another dog," said Pamela.
Now is a perfect time for your family to welcome in a new, four-legged friend.
However, if you can not take in an animal, do not worry - there are ways you can still help! Consider fostering animals looking for homes, volunteering at your local shelter, or making a donation to a shelter.
Before adopting, here are six things you should consider from VetStreet.
