New SIU Carbondale chancellor shares vision for the university

CARBONDALE, IL -

Southern Illinois University Carbondale's new chancellor is sharing what he sees in the university's future.

Chancellor Carlo Montemagno said his vision for the university is for SIU to be a leading institution by the year 2025. He said that can only happen by leaving the past behind.

"We (can't) allow a small population of naysayers and disillusion to put a damper on a division of moving forward or the optimism that we should have. The best days of SIU are going to be ahead of us," said SIU Chancellor Carlo Montemagno.

The chancellor said he plans to work with faculty and students to gather ideas about the best way to move forward.

With the Illinois budget impasse over and the beginning of fall semester inching closer, SIU undergraduate student body president Joshua Bowens said he is ready to establish a partnership with the new chancellor. That is something he said will be different than the last chancellor.

"With our previous administration and chancellor, it wasn't the best relationship. He didn't really talk to students," said Bowens.

Bowens said he's happy to work with the new chancellor on issues that concern the student body, such as decreased resources for international and minority students. He said he has some concerns  "When it comes down to taking care of business and answering our questions or getting straight to the point, I haven't seen that yet," said Bowens.

Bowens said he is very optimistic about the new chancellor and what he will bring to SIU. He hopes to schedule a meeting with the chancellor in the near future to discuss the upcoming semester.
