Officials say deadly helicopter crash near Charlottesville, VA, linked to violent rally

UPDATE: State Police have confirmed the deaths of two people in a helicopter crash near Charlottesville are linked to the violent white nationalist rally earlier Saturday. 

A Virginia State Police spokeswoman says the pilot and a passenger were killed in the crash. The Associated Press reports officials are linking the crash and the violence in Charlottesville. 

This brings the number of deaths connected to the rally to three. 

Virginia State Police confirm that a helicopter has crashed near Charlottesville, Virginia, report a helicopter crashed, killing two people. 

The Bristol Herald Courier reports a Virginia State Police helicopter crashed near the a golf course in Charlottesville, according to witnesses. 

On Facebook, the Virginia State Police confirmed two people were killed in the crash. The law enforcement agency says no one on the ground was hurt. 

The post did not confirm whether the helicopter was a state police helicopter. 

It is not yet clear whether the crash was in any way linked to a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville that turned violent Saturday. 

One person was killed and 19 were injured when a car slammed into another car that was driving through a crowd of counter-protesters at the rally.
