The month of October has already been the wettest on record but shattering the record will be a possibility by week's end as more heavy rain moves in starting Thursday evening. Heavy rain will be possible Thursday evening through the day on Friday along with embedded thunderstorms leading to an additional 3-5 inches of rain across the area.
The National Weather Service in Paducah has issued a Flash Flood Watch for the area that will begin on Thursday and run through Friday Night. Here is statement they have released:
LATEST FORECAST GUIDANCE INDICATES THE POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY RAIN
ALONG AND AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING FRONTAL BOUNDARY THURSDAY
NIGHT AND FRIDAY. SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WILL
LIKELY BEGIN THURSDAY...BUT MOST OF THE FLOODING POTENTIAL
SHOULD HOLD OFF UNTIL THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY AS HEAVY RAIN
WITH EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUES TO CROSS OVER THE SAME
LOCATIONS.
THERE IS THE POTENTIAL FOR 3 TO 5 INCHES OF RAIN BEFORE THE
HEAVIEST RAIN COMES TO AN END LATE FRIDAY...WITH THE GREATEST
POTENTIAL ALONG AND WEST OF THE INTERSTATE 57 AND INTERSTATE 24
CORRIDORS. LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS WILL BE POSSIBLE IN LOCATIONS
WHERE THUNDERSTORMS ACCOMPANY THE HEAVY RAINFALL. THIS MAY
RESULT IN RAPID RISES ON SMALL RIVERS AND STREAMS IN THE WATCH
AREA...AND FLOODING OF LOW-LYING AREAS IS POSSIBLE.
The Weather Authority will be providing updates on Local 6, on our webchannel, the 24/7 Weather Channel, and for our Facebook fans online and this event unfolds.
Please remember flash flooding safety. Avoid flooded roadways. Since recent rainfall has saturated the ground, roads will more dangerous and susceptible to being washed out near local creeks. Turn around, don't drown. It only takes 6 inches of moving water to lift a vehicle. Please keep children from playing in flood waters, especially near drainage ditches. Those waters can be fast flowing and deeper than expected.
