Meteorologist John Champion is a native of Mayfield, KY. John's interest in weather goes way back. He was one of the original WPSD-TV Weather Watchers in February 1986 when he was a teenager. He attended Western Kentucky University earning a degree in meteorology and broadcasting, and interned at Channel 6 with Cal Sisto during the summer of 1991. He served as the weekend meteorologist for WBKO-TV in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 1992-93. In 1994, he joined the weather staff of NBC affiliate KARK-TV in Little Rock, Arkansas.
While there, John became a member of the National Weather Association in 1996, and anchored and reported during one of the worst tornado outbreaks in Arkansas history during March 1997. He also co-anchored KARK's non-stop five-hour coverage of an unusually strong winter tornado outbreak in January 1999. John "came home" to western Kentucky and Local 6 in April 2001.
John and his wife, Michelle, have two beautiful children, Hannah and Trevor. They enjoy visiting amusement parks. John also likes to play softball and tennis, and he's a UK basketball fan. He enjoyed seeing the Wildcats win the National Championship in San Antonio in 1998, and even met Tubby Smith and Ashley Judd in the bargain!
John loves weather. He loves this area, and it shows. Watch for him every morning on WPSDLocal 6!
