Q: Describe your school program (existing or proposed).
A: Sedalia Sprinters is a health/running club for students grades 4-6, faculty and staff. The club meets twice a week and follows a scheduled program in which everyone trains and is prepared to successfully complete a 5K. The program is designed to stress commitment, perseverance and dedication while promoting a healthy lifestyle. Running etiquette and safety guidelines are also taught and applied during each practice. Last year was the inaugural year, and we had 85 participants. The club trained and ran in the local Sedalia Day 5K. In addition to the students and staff of the school, also many parents and community members were also inspired to run based on the participation of the kids.
Q: Why does your program need a PABF grant?
A: While training for the 5K, we had to use the school grounds. We ran around the perimeter of the school grounds. In order to get the desired distances, we would have to make many circles. Also, the grounds would be very muddy and at times even dangerous due to the layout of the ground. As we were closer to the race date, we had to bus all Sedalia Sprinters to another location in order to run 3 miles. This not only required transportation, but we also had to get local law officials to follow us while we ran. The road was NOT blocked off and traffic was allowed around us, putting the kids in danger. We need this funding to provide a safe, quality running track of 0.6 of a mile around the perimeter of school. We have had a local asphalt company help make the most efficient plan for the track. We can tie this into existing sidewalks and will be away from the highway.
Q: How will the grant make a difference at your school?
A: This grant will make a difference in our school as well as our entire community. Our small rural community does not have any running or work out facilities. There are no sidewalks or even shoulders of the road to run on. A track around the school would also benefit all the students not just the Sedalia Sprinters. Community, faculty, staff as well as all Sedalia Elementary students can use the track at any time. It will not be solely for the use of the running club. Research shows that activity increases student achievement and having an on-site track would allow students an opportunity to participate in more physical activity.
