Ron Cooper, a Comanche man from Lawton Oklahoma, is hiking the entire Northern Route of the Cherokee Trail of Tears this winter. He started on January 17th in Charleston, Tennessee.
Ron and his escort from the Kentucky Chapter of the Trail of Tears Association will be passing through Crittenden County KY on Friday, February 18.
They camped on the historic Trail Thursday night, thanks to property owner Donny Boone. On Friday, they will walk from the Fredonia area to the Salem area. On Saturday, they will tour the Mantle Rock and Berry's Ferry Registered Historic Sites.
Friday, February 18th is a special day because Ron will pass the 300-mile mark on his 850-mile journey.
Ron's wife, Kristal, has their travel trailer staged at Victory RV Park near Paducah - available if Ron needs help or more supplies.
Ron will take a break on Sunday and plans to have a spaghetti dinner with local fans of his Facebook page in Boaz.
Ron will continue his hike Monday in Golconda, Illinois. He will be greeted and escorted by members of the Trail of Tears Association in that state also. It will take him about 5 days to complete the 65-mile segment of the Trail of Tears in Illinois.
