Graves High claims record number of AP Scholars; Hackel named National AP Scholar
Graves County High School students during the 2010-11 school year scored Advanced Placement achievements at record levels, including the first time 12 students earned the designation of AP Scholar. Sean Hackel, valedictorian in the Class of 2011, earned the rare level of National AP Scholar. He is believed to be the first GCHS student to earn that accolade. National AP official recently calculated and released the information.
Advanced Placement courses are academically rigorous and can result in the student’s earning college credit by scoring 3 or higher on a 5-point scale end-of-course assessment. Graves County High School students are enrolled in the high school courses that can result in dual credit for more than 15 subjects, filling well over 400 classroom seats, all tolled. The graduated grade point average allows students who take the rigorous courses actually to exceed the grade of 4 on the 4.0 scale since they earn a score of 5 for earning an A in an AP course.
Hackel earned the title of National AP Scholar by maintaining and average score of 4 on all AP exams taken and 4 or higher on eight or more of those exams.
Six students earned the classification of AP Scholar with Distinction. They each maintained an average score of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scored 3 or higher on five or more exams. Those students include Hackel and fellow 2011 graduates Kelsey Colley, Holly Jones, Neil Purcell, and Rachel Smith. Megan Durham, a junior last year, also earned the title.
Four students earned the designation of AP Scholar with Honor(s). They each maintained an average score of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scored 3 or higher on at least four exams. All four students were juniors last year. They are Jessica Alford, Sara Barrett, Emily Duff, and Samuel Williams.
Twelve students earned the title of AP Scholar for scoring 3 or higher on three AP exams. Graduates of the Class of 2011 inlcude Alexis Elliott, Ragon Grimes, Emily Hatley, Tatiana Hendrickson, and Leeanna Quertermous. Students who were juniors last year and members of the Class of 2012 include C.J. Elliott, Shayna Hall, Mary Hummel, Kadie Kinnis, and Emily Waggoner. Students who were sophomores last year and are members of the Class of 2013 include Jonathan Goatley and Preston Simmons.
