Miranda Barnett teaches special education

Graves High awarded CEC grant

Graves County High School special education teacher Miranda Barnett applied for and was awarded a grant recently she believes will benefit every student in her class.
“The Council for Exceptional Children is an international community of professionals who are the voice and vision of special and gifted education. CEC's mission is to improve, through excellence and advocacy, the education and quality of life for children and youth with exceptionalities and to enhance the engagement of their families,” Barnett said.
“As a member of the CEC, I submitted a grant proposal in the beginning of this school year for an iPad and specific applications to benefit my students,” she explained. “The grant would allow students with disabilities, specifically students with deficits in the area of communication, to have access to visual applications using the iPad.”
She continued, “The iPad would increase motivation and enthusiasm while also improving communication skills. The application that I proposed, along with the iPad, is called Proloquo2Go. Proloquo2Go is an app that provides a ‘full-featured augmentative and alternative communication solution for people who have difficulty speaking. It provides natural sounding text-to-speech voices, high resolution up-to-date symbols, powerful automatic conjugations, a default vocabulary of 7,000 items, advanced word prediction, full expandability and extreme ease of use.’ This iPad and applications will not only benefit a few students, but every student in my class will benefit with the use of technology and new opportunities.”
Barnett concluded, “I am very honored and excited to have received this award. I am a huge fan of the CEC and believe it is a great organization to be a part of as an educator.”
