A fast start

Graves HIgh initiates academic season

The Graves County High School Varsity Academic Team chalked up its first wins of the season recently as the team took on three area teams in an at-home triple-header.
The Eagle Academic Team started off defeating Fulton County 19-18, then rolled past Reidland 36-3, before upsetting Calloway County 24-23. Team captain Jonathan Goatley led the way with 34 points, followed by sophomore Mitul Ahmed with 13 points. Senior Miranda Oldham and freshman Grayson Dietz rounded out the toss-up scoring, with one point and six points, respectively.
The JV team also soundly defeated Fulton County and Reidland, before falling to Calloway in the final round.
"This is a big win for the Eagles,” said varsity coach Jeremy Krug. “Calloway has traditionally had one of the strongest academic teams in the region. We have a young team, but the fact that we're beating teams with more experience shows that Graves will be a powerful force this year.”
The JV team will play at the Western Kentucky University Invitational in Bowling Green Saturday, Oct. 29, while the varsity team returns to action at GCHS at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3.
