Graves school board honors Bob Spalding

The Graves County Board of Education at its December 2012 meeting presented its first-ever Friend of Education individual award to former board chairman Bob Spalding of Fancy Farm. He served on the board from 1979-87. “When he came to the board, times had changed to the point where the small graduating classes at our community high schools simply couldn’t provide what students were getting at other, larger high schools. Graves County graduates weren’t prepared to compete on a level playing field with graduates of other, larger schools,” Superintendent Pete Galloway said. “Mr. Spalding was a leader in transforming high school in Graves County from a relic of the past to the cutting edge for the future. That included supporting efforts to increase funding of our schools to the level that other counties supported their schools… There is no doubt that the actions the board of his era took paved the way for the widespread success of the Graves County Schools today.” Galloway (left, foreground) is pictured presenting a plaque to Spalding. Behind them, from left, are board members Ronnie Holmes, Kevin Curtsinger, Kelly Whitaker, Donnie Reed, Jim Wurth, and Madison Wilferd.
