Graves Hi sends boys to Sweet 16 hoops

Graves County senior basketball player Tyler Starkey is shown answering questions from the media following a Monday afternoon pep rally at the school. The First Region Champion Eagles will play in the first round of the 2013 Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s boys’ state tournament at 5:30 p.m. Central Time Wednesday. Their opponent will be Third Region Champion Ohio County at Rupp Arena on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington. Starkey was named Most Valuable Player in the First Region Tournament. He told reporters his teammates were equally deserving of the award. This year’s Sweet Sixteen is the first year coach Terry Birdsong’s team has represented far western Kentucky since 2009. Birdsong says he believes his 25-8 Graves County Eagles match up well with Ohio County coach Paul Decker’s 25-6 Eagles.
