Farmington Elem Reading Buddies help out

Farmington Elementary School for several years has featured a Reading Buddies program. It pairs students with volunteers from the community. Adults and high school students comprise the largest groups of volunteers. The program started the school year with a breakfast, where volunteers learned a few tips on working with the students. However, volunteers are accepted throughout the year, particularly now because the number of student referrals is greater than the number of volunteers. Therefore, several volunteers have more than one Reading Buddy. The program is very simple, after the required background check, volunteers meet with students once a week or so and read together for about 30 minutes. Besides helping students develop their reading skills, the children also benefit from the mentoring of trusted adults and older students. To volunteer or to learn more, contact family resource center director Jennifer Morris at (270) 328-4994 or email her at Jennifer.Morris@graves.kyschools.us.
