Grave County Schools students from kindergarten through 12th grade may participate in the first-ever in-district chess tournament. The idea is to introduce chess to students throughout the district and to have a fun competition. A parent is asked to stay for younger players (K-5).
The G/30 unrated Swiss-style of play will be featured. The entry fee is $10. Food and snacks will be for sale on-site as well.
The competition will take place in the Graves County High School cafeteria, starting at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 27.
This will be a four-round unrated tournament and has four sections (K-3, K-5, K-8, K-12). A blitz tie-breaker may be used to determine place holders in the event of a tie. Swiss-style tournaments allow everybody to play four games. Players will play opponents that match closer to their ability after each round. United States Chess Federation rules apply for the competition and will be covered.
Round 1 will begin at 9 a.m., with each following round starting as soon as the last game of the current round ends. Awards will follow the final round, tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. Interested participants are asked to complete a registration form and submit it and the entry fee of $10 by Friday, April 19.
Late submission on April 27, the day of the tournament, will cost $20 at the door.
