Mayfield mayor supports GEAR UP Kentucky

Mayfield Mayor Teresa Cantrell spoke to Graves County Middle School seventh graders recently at a GEAR UP Kentucky rally in the school’s gymnasium. “The acronym stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. It’s a grant-funded program and the goal is to prepare every student for college success,” said Jennifer Woodward, a GEAR UP staff member. “Our goal in the curriculum and activities for middle and high school students is to create more of a college-bound culture. It’s not only to help them get to college, but to finish successfully.” Cantrell told the students that she completed her bachelor’s degree as a nontraditional student at Mid-Continent University, went on to earn a master’s degree at William Woods University, and since has taught in the MCU Advantage program in which she had been a student. She said college today is a necessity in the working world marketplace.
