Death at the Start&Till Death Do us Part

It all began May 3, 2008...however, nine months prior to May the 3rd I had just graduated from Mortuary School. I was serving my apprenticeship at Imes-Miller Funeral Home. On May the 3rd a tragic accident occurred in our hometown of Murray. I was the apprentice embalmer on the "case." From the beginning I got very close/attached to the family. This was something that was unusual for me to do. By having these feelings it made it difficult for me to want to go into work the night of the visitation (May 5, 2008)! I called my mom and told her that I couldn't go to work because it was just too heartbreaking for me. Mom reminded me that I was in this to help families and that no matter how bad something is something good with come from it. I still didn't want to go but this is my ministry and I decided that God wanted me there! I went into work there were 1100 people there for the visitation. Half way through the night some random guy named, Ronny, came up front, sat down, and proceeded to talk to me. After about an hour of working and talking a friend of Ronny's came up and started to talk to him, his name was Chris. I noticed he was around my age and was cute but figured he was taken. Ronny introduced us and told Chris that I was an embalmer and funeral director. They then asked who embalmed their friend. I answered that I did! I think that freaked Chris out because he walked off after that! Ronny kept talking about how talented and smart Chris was and how he needed a good girl. Ronny then asked me for my number to give to Chris. I was reluctant, but decided that I didn't have anything to lose so I did...expecting not to hear from him!
Three days had passed and no call from Chris. I figured he wasn't interested and just to forget about it. My ex and I at the time were talking and thinking about dating again so we sat up a date and went out. We were talking and I said I wish that God would just give me a sign of who I should be with. We both agreed that would make life a lot let complicated. As we were walking up to the restaurant there was this HUGE bench sign that said Hill Backhoe and Trucking with a big picture of this “Funeral Home” guy. My ex said what was that guy’s name? I realized that there was a literally sign with this guy on there. I said what a coincidence but thought nothing of it! After eating we went to the movies. When we got to the movies the advertisements were still on. We were talking and watching the ads when all of a sudden this even larger sign popped up saying, Hill Backhoe and Trucking! It even had a bigger picture of this guy! While there it popped up four more times. I still thought nothing of it because it had been three days and still no word. On the way back to my house my ex and I had decided that we shouldn’t continue dating and we should just be friends. As soon as we pulled into my driveway my phone started ringing. I didn’t recognize the number, but I answered anyways. On the other end of the phone I hear, “Alison, this is Chris the guy from the funeral home!” I was in complete shock! I asked him if I could call him back in a few minutes because I was busy at the moment. After Patrick left I called Chris back. We talked for a little while. That day was the first day of many many long talks. On May 10th Chris called me and invited me to the Demolition Derby in Paris. I went and had a blast! It rained all night. Everyone was soaked but we had so…much fun. I called my mom and told her that this was one night I didn’t want to end. The next Wednesday we decided to go on our first date. After that night I knew this wasn’t going to be a short fling. I was excited to see where it was going.
On our 16th month anniversary Chris finally told me he loved me, though he later admitted that he knew he loved me at one month! Six days after our 23rd month dating anniversary (and two days after my birthday) he purposed before we left for church.
On December 18th we will be united as husband and wife. My father will be officiating the ceremony and will be assisted by a very close family friend and Chris’ grandfather. We had talked about getting married in one of the funeral homes that I worked at, but decided on a church wedding surrounded by those that we love! So that is our love story, death brought us together and we will stand by our vows till Death do us part!
