Wind Chime Inn

On April 26, 2010 Momma Hummingbird made her nest on our Crescent Moon Wind Chime on our patio. May 01 found a broken egg on the patio. By May 2nd nest was complete, by May 3rd there was one egg in the nest and on the 4th there were two. May 25th there were now two baby hummers. We went through severe wind gusts, one hummer fell out of nest, we picked it up and placed it back in the nest. We added moss to the nest as they grew, secured it with duck tape, Secured a basket under the wind chime then took a small dog leash and fastened it to the wind chime @ secured to our BBQ, put up a canopy to protect from the high winds & at one point had to remove the wind chime to protect from sheets of rain. A couple of nights Mamma freaked out and left the nest unattended for both nights, found out they get disorientated by internal and external lights, so we had to keep all lights out in the house at night, just had light from our TV. Outside my kitchen window was where the wind chime was, so I ended up hanging a sheet over the window. One baby flew into neighbors yard prematurely, I retrieved it and brought it back to the nest. Our patio was looking like a homeless
incampment. By the 9th of June first hummer flew out of the nest, by the 13th of June 2nd baby hummer left the nest., They both stayed in the yard and I was able to capture them on camera after they left. Momma was still feeding them and teaching them how to survive on their own.

I felt blessed to have been apart of their survival and have to admit I had empty nest syndrome after they left.
