Graves tennis trio advance in 2013 postseason play
Graves County's trio of (4) Preston Simmons (pictured at right)-Mitchell Wiggins and (4) Emily Whitnell recently advanced to the semifinals of the First Region Tennis Tournament. The Eagle teams found their Lone Oak competition as good as advertised. Whitnell played the No. 1 girls’ singles seed from Lone Oak while Simmons-Wiggins played the No. 1 boys’ doubles seed from Lone Oak. This is Simmons-Wiggins’ second consecutive appearance in the regional tennis semifinals, while it’s Simmons’ third appearance.
The Eagle boys felt confident in their chances in the match, as they had played this team close earlier in the season. The first set was close, as both teams were playing their best tennis. Simmons-Wiggins led 5-4 in the first set. Then, Lone Oak went on a run, won the next three games, and the first set, 7-5. The second set started as the Eagles were reeling from their first set loss. Lone Oak jumped out to a 5-0 led. Simmons-Wiggins managed one more game before the end of the match, 7-5, 6-1. They will advance to the state tennis tournament.
In reaching her third consecutive regional tennis semifinal, Emily Whitnell had to face the two-time defending champion. Whitnell started the match strong, pushing the defending champion to make aggressive shots. The first set score was 6-0, but the games were much closer than the score. In the second set, Whitnell managed to win one game, but the match ended in a 6-0, 6-1 score. She will advance to the state tennis tournament as well. Both Eagle teams will compete in the state tournament in Lexington from May 16-18.

Graves County High School athletic director Doug Gloyd was appointed as the Western Regions At-Large Representative on the Board of Directors for Regions 1-8 of the Kentucky High School Athletic Directors Association at the organization’s recent conference. “I’m honored to be selected,” Gloyd said. “This is an opportunity to influence high school athletics throughout Kentucky and to increase the visibility of Graves County across the state. Gloyd is completing his second year at GCHS. He’s led the school in expanding its athletics program and in bringing Tim Tebow, Peyton Manning, and the stars of A&E’s Duck Dynasty TV show to a large audience for speaking engagement fundraisers at the school. “We’re very proud of Mr. Gloyd for his increased involvement in statewide athletics and for his hard work and success on behalf of the Eagle Foundation and its fund-raising to support the Graves County Schools,” said GCHS principal Matthew Madding.

Graves County High School junior Buddy Jackson has been selected for Tom Leach's 2013 All-Resilient Team. He is pictured here with GCHS athletic director Doug Gloyd. Jackson has been dealing with diabetes since age 8. Despite wearing an insulin pump, he is very involved as a swimmer, wrestler, soccer manager, as GCHS Eagle mascot "Beaker," and in numerous choir and drama activities. He recently was recognized in Louisville at the Kentucky High School Athletic Directors’ conference. The All-Resilient Team’s mission speaks to the concept. "‘Resiliency’ is one of the foundational concepts of athletic competition at any level. And the notion of recovery from a setback, i.e., adversity, is something we all must encounter at some point in our lives. The 2010-11 Kentucky basketball team did not have any physical setbacks but they did encounter numerous obstacles and coach John Calipari's squad showed amazing resiliency in reaching the Final Four. Our soldiers must embrace the need for ‘resiliency’ in situations that sometimes might mean the difference between life and death. Our ‘All-Resilient Team, powered by National Guard Career Opportunities,’ celebrates high school male and female student-athletes who overcome adversity on their path to success. It might be an injury, a disability, a difficult family or health circumstance--something that puts an obstacle in their path that might derail someone who is less resilient.
