U.S. Congressman Ed Whitfield stepping down

U.S. Congressman Ed Whitfield will step down on Tuesday.

His resignation is effective at 6:00 p.m.

What’s next for the House? Here is what you need to know.

There will be a special election on November 8th. That’s the same day as the general election.

James Comer and Sam Gaskins are running against each other in that election.

Both men’s name will appear on the ballot twice. Once to decide which will finish out the term from November to January, and another to decide which will fill the seat after January.

The constitution allows for any Congressional seat left vacant late in the term to remain vacant until the special election.
